New classes and what to bring

Hi Everyone.

Only two weeks to the start of our autumn classes

(Ansdell Tuesday 13th September, Springfield Wednesday14th)

I know you will soon be asking me what will you need to bring. So it would be really helpful if you could find some reference images. Look for images that a well-lit with dark shadows and bright highlights. The subject doesn’t matter as long as it has a good range of tones from deep shadows to bright highlights.

I’m thinking the easiest thing would be to arrange and photograph your own still-life. Choose objects that have different colours and textures. (Yes, those ever versatile onions, peppers and bananas would work well-What a surpise!)

Here are some tips to help you:

Arrange your objects on a board (drawing or chopping)

Place your board near a bright sunny window or an angel-poise lamp.

Rotate your board until you see strongly defined shadow and highlights.

We will need colour photos and black and white copies of them.

To keep it interesting if you are doing both morning and afternoon classes, choose a different view/subject for each class.

You’ll only need basic colours to begin with – Payne’s grey (or black), Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Yellow ochre (plus white for acrylics)

Happy reference gathering.
